WWI Unit
In the World War 1 project, we looked at the first world war through a few different perspectives. We first read All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque, then we read an obscure British play called Journey's End. In the middle of all of that, we looked at significant events in WWI, and made an art piece based on the event. Here is mine:
I was inspired to create this piece by the sinking of the British passenger ship, Lusitania, in 1915 (during World War 1). The sinking of the ship was one of the main events of the war that prompted America to join the fighting, which happened in 1917. The ship was carrying over 1,500 passengers, with over 120 of them being American citizens.
In the image, the American “Uncle Sam” hat represents the ship, and the two flags on either side of the hat represent the side that America joined, once it decided to join the war. As you can see in the lower right corner, there is a German submarine, or U-Boat, shooting a torpedo at the ship.
I decided to use acrylic paint to color the image because of the effects in the ocean and sky. I thought it would help the water to look more realistic. I am happy with how it turned out, though if I could have done something differently I would have used an actual canvas, since the slippery surface of the poster board made it hard for the paint to stick.
